South of France, Things to see and do
-A-Car Nice Airport Rent
If the south of France, Cote d'Azur. I know what you think: face, a cliché. Think again.
I agreed to go there on vacation for a week with a friend, mostly because I had never been and is one of the famous places of all the books and movies and magazines. Oh, and because I like to travel with her. But As the time drew near, I began to worry about money and, frankly, the level of my closet. Hey, Brad and Angelina are more and more her last baby, this is not miserable shorts and sandals, beach vacation functional.
TOURS Cannes Nice things to do in the south of the Côte d'Azur, France
Southern France / Côte d'Azur Côte d'Azur. Call it what you want, everything is beautiful.
How wrong I was. I discovered that southern France is a the most beautiful places on earth, is more relaxed, fun, affordable and very, very welcoming.
We flew to the airport of Toulon on a cheap flight from Ryanair London. And sometimes, what you earn on airfares, you lose the time and cost of all other transfers. It is a small airport, but more practical if you stay St Tropez (my advice: unless you are very rich), but not so good if you stay more under the sea, where we were. We had to drive to the airport of Toulon itself itself, which took half an hour. He took us to the station we had to take a train to Nice, where we had booked an apartment for the week. Lesson learned: Nice easyJet has its own airport and good value.
But the train from Nice were quite regular and took about two hours or less. It was beautiful to see all the beautiful landscapes and begin to appreciate the glorious mountain and coastal areas is the Col de la Cote d'Azur and between cities such legends as Antibes and Cannes. And the train was my favorite Dogbox configuration so we ended up talking to a charming French man in our department who worked at Monaco and offered to show us a few days later. He will gave us his card and promised to appeal. Unfortunately, shortly after he got off the train in Nice texted my friend had found her luggage tag on the ground – is not a good sign … We can not be appealed.
Our apartment was great (through nicepebbles.com restricted). Much better than staying in a hotel because we did not have the space and privacy and could self-satisfied, not only a necessity in a city as large bakeries and cheese, etc, but is more cheap.
The apartment was in the heart of the old but very modern. We had the full experience of waking to the sound of French voice calls (for usually with their garbage truck noise at 6:00, which took some of the romance of it!), then down to the corner bakery for croissants and baguettes BEST I really liked (Artisan Baker Street Marene). These things are dependence and light bread I am sure there is no risk of gaining weight …
We have become accustomed to buy a loaf of bread every morning and make bread with cheese and salad to take on our daily excursions. It seems very sad, but when the cheese is very good and the supermarket is full beautiful things like confit of pear and fig puree to accompany the cheese is heavenly. In fact, I brought jars of these things home with me. I am sure the French scoff at the idea – like taking the equivalent of peanut butter, no doubt, but the commonplaces of a country are the joy of this journey.
The best advice I have given is that all regional buses in this part of the world today costs € 1 per trip. Therefore, it is really affordable way to enjoy the coast. The terminal bus station is located just outside the old city. Armed with sticks, shoes (I had to buy flat-heeled shoes are only in anticipation of a life glamorous), found most mornings hopping on a bus in a fabulous place. In fact, it is a little off – As we ate croissants and had a little time explore the old town of Nice, walking along the beach or on the hill (known as the castle) for coffee in sight, is not usually get in a good day trips until the afternoon.
Best of the capture of the bus has come to see the landscape and houses. And lo, the blue water in this part of the world! Côte d'Azur is not a lie – Is the most blue water I've ever seen.
Excursion to Eze
We first visited Eze, a beautiful walled medieval city perched on the sea is winding steps, narrow streets (no cars), and stone houses. Up top is a beautiful cactus garden, is worth the ticket price (about 5 euros I recall), including a garden of contemplation large wooden chairs, where you can elongate and look down along the coast – divine! From there, we saw umbrellas on a terrace and was tempted to take a drink with the best view of the world.
Day trips Eze Eze Nice trip
Nice Eze Touring
We finished our Eze way back and found the hotel Chateau Eza. It has only 10 rooms and we could have a hot chocolate on the terrace. Around us, people attended the cut champagne by waiters in uniform, but the hot chocolate was more our budget and it was very good, presented in a white pot and delicious. And the view is worth the price … (Which was strange as it may be). You do not need to be rich to live the life of the famous and glamorous, if only for a moment.
The trip return was less charming – a trick to learn is that the last buses are often quite early – about 19:15, in this case and not to be missed or if you are stuck. Taxis are rare and very expensive.
Another trick to visit Eze (and should!) Is to catch the right bus. Protect the Sea Eze (or something) – which takes you to the City, along water at the bottom of the hill. Then you have an hour or more walk up the hill on a stony route favored by the philosopher Nietzsche. If you No mountain goat, I do not recommend. We were lucky to board the bus to Eze – politeness when good planning. (You can also book a visit to Eze and Monaco from Nice on Viator website.)
Day trip to Antibes and Monaco
Another place that was visited Antibes, a very small town. One of our main reasons is the Museo Picasso – who spent much time painting. Unfortunately it was closed for renovation – and had been for two years! Traps buying guides old hand! But the city has been worth the trip and has some great gifts for friends. Oh, and the museum reopens later this year. He was about to …
He also made the obligatory visit to Monaco. This legendary place that attracted by promises of fast cars and fashion fabulous. Therefore, put on their prettiest dresses and favorite shoes, riding our budget bus and headed for the mythical place to change lives. Well done. I hated I had my first cigarette in years! Yes, do not go.
I think part of the problem is that they have been developing for the Grand Prix this year so it was noisy dusty and difficult to walk. I was also surprised by what a concrete jungle, it is. Building in disarray over the other and not pretty to see in any direction. Another problem was local knowledge – a shame as the man on the train we missed. We visited the royal castle – worth for mills and Boon 1980 portrait style Princess Grace and the family had a terrible hot chocolate, but I confused the casino, but expensive cosmopolitan drink to numb the shame, then took a bus to return to our beloved Nice for dinner and I wonder why we never went.
Eating & Drinking in Nice
A few recommendations for dinner in Nice: In the market just back from the beach there are many seafood restaurants and the food is really wonderful. Prices also wonderful. In its place was a delicious dish of mussels (mussels) cheapest to most local coffee Socca. (In one corner Mascoina). community banks in the street, a window of orders, a simple menu and one of the most I have tasted delicious. Try pissaladier – local olive onion pizza and anchovies – Yum!
You can also visit Oliviera. In the Rue du Collet This restaurant specializes little olive oil with each course and the fabulous owner / home / lover gives you a different flavor oil. They also sell (obviously), but the large size bottle was a bit of a deterrent.
Another local favorite for food and the atmosphere was a cafe called Gesu Gesu, the street opposite the church – great service and nice guys in the next table even bought Cognac. Follow through one of around 90 flavors of ice cream Fennocio – I recommend the cinnamon purple or pink or ginger, …
